WHAT IS SLIPPED DISC ?
Slipped Disc better known as Herniated disc is becoming the most common cause of neck pain and back pain in Malaysia. Disc refer to the rubbery cushion that sit between the individual bones that stack to make our spines. A spinal disk has a soft, jellylike centre known as nucleus encased in a tougher, rubbery exterior known as annulus.
A herniated disc refers to the nucleus of the disc pushes out through a tear in the annulus. As it pushes through the annulus, it leaks out and put pressure on nearby nerve which result in pain, numbness or weak in arm or leg depending on which part of the spine is the disk rupturing. The pain can range from mild to severe depending on the degree of herniation. In fact, the severity of pain is directly proportional to the seriousness of the condition. For example, it can be mild where it is affecting the neck or back only, to a more dangerous condition where the pain radiates down the arms or legs. In severe cases, it can cause numbness, tingling sensation, weakness, or paralysis in the arms or legs.
WHAT CAUSES SLIPPED DISC ?
There are many causes leading to disc herniation, it can be injury, worn out or aging-related wear and tear called disc degeneration. As we age, our disks become less flexible and more prone to tearing or rupturing with even a minor strain or twist.
Injury can even happen when you lift up something heavy using your back muscles instead of your leg and thigh muscles. Rarely, traumatic event such as a fall or a blow to the back is the cause.
There are always other factors that increase the probability of disc herniation. One of the main risk factors is related to occupation in which people with physically demanding jobs have a greater risk of back problems as they involve repetitive lifting, twisting, pulling, pushing or bending sideway. Other risk factors include being overweight, genetic related and smoking which lessens the oxygen supply to the disc.
WORST CASE SCENARIO
Our spinal cord ends just above our waists. What continue through the spinal canal is a group of long nerve root that resemble a horse’ tail we called it “cauda equina”. In the case where nerves from cauda equina are compressed, many worsening symptoms will happen including bladder or bowel dysfunction as well as saddle anaesthesia – the loss of sensation affects the area that would touch a saddle – the inner thighs, back of the legs and the area around the rectum. We always advise our patients not to avoid looking into the severity of disc herniation, always treat it as soon as you have disc herniation.
