WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY ?
Shock Waves are movements of extremely high pressure caused by, for example, an explosion, an earthquake or a plane breaking the sound barrier.
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is the application of Shock Waves in medicine. EWST is a non-evasive, non-electrical high energy wave that passes through the body via a hand-held probe.
The shock waves produce a rapid increase in blood circulation to the target area and will break down fibrous scar tissue. Scar tissue is non-elastic tissue which builds up over time and will limit our movement and functions of joint, thereby weakening the unaffected tissue surrounding it. It is effective for chronic conditions, especially plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, golfer elbow, shoulder and hip pain.
By increasing circulation and breaking down scar tissue, shockwave therapy will stimulate cell regeneration and promote normal healing and rapid reduction of pain.
It is clinically proven that shockwave helps in:
1. Reduction of pain felt by nerve fibres
2. Increase of blood circulation in surrounding soft tissues
3. Beginning of healing process triggered by stem cells activation
WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT DURING THE TREATMENT ?
Research has shown that shockwave therapy works as same way as red chilli peppers.
First, the mouth is on fire, the it feels completely numb. In human body, C nerve fibers will release a specific substance called substance P which are responsible for transmitting pain. However, when shockwave is activated for some period, the C nerve fibers will become incapable and release less substance P and eventually reduce the pain.
Reduction in substance P can also cause a declination of neurogenic inflammation and lead to foster healing by activating stem cells in the treated tissue.
